Music lovers, help me out

Help me!

The Kat has requested that I get her some serious rawking music--as opposed to her usual fare of Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, etc.--and she named some bands about which I know little to nothing. I spent the 1990s listening to a lot of the pop and country music that was big at the time, and I steered my way clear of the Rage Against the Machine/Nine Inch Nails oevre. However, this is exactly what Kat wants, so I'm clueless!

I need some help--what are some good album (sorry, CD) titles that will contain the --er--"hits" and must-have songs of these bands? I've heard of Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails (courtesy of a chick I used to date back in the day), but--are those the "good ones" to get? And Rage Against the Machine--what the hell is that, anyway? What a weird name for a band. Rage against what machine?

Anyway--if you can offer some other suggestions for good music in this genre, that would also be appreciated.

Signed,
A music dork who still thinks '80s-era Pat Benatar is "hard rock"

Go with grunge. I recommend Mudhoney, "Under a billion suns" it's from 2006 but still has their edge from the early 90s.
I blogged one of their songs from You Tube at my store. They pre-dated and outlasted Nirvana, another good choice, if you ask me.
(and I'm a geezer)

Panic On by Madder Rose is both a chick band and a rock out band, so this may be a choice Kat will like.

If you want power pop/Ramones kind of stuff, I Should Coco by Supergrass might be your cup of tea.

The Ramones' Acid Eaters is fantastic.

Some John Denver might be nice.

PJ Harvey--Uh huh, her

The Breeders--Mountain Battles

early Liz Phair "White Chocolate Space Egg" and "Exile in Guyville"

Siouxsie and the Banshees: early stuff, I really dig Nocturne, A Kiss in the Dream House and JuJu.

I have just starting to a bit of Nine Inch Nails myself but I like their song - The Hand that Feeds.

I also like the Stone Temple Pilots - Purple, Core and No. 4. and of the current iteration Velvet Revolver - Leibertad.

What about the 4 non blondes?

I don't really listen to a lot of RATM or NIN myself, but I do have NIN's new album, Year Zero, and it's very decent.

For other bands that are sort of in this vein, I would highly recommend Pixies (Surfer Rosa and Death to the Pixies are both great).

For current bands that rock hard but still have a sensibility you can live with, I would highly recommend the Constantines - they're fabulous.

Rasputina's Cabin Fever.
Blowoff's eponymous CD.
Ladytron's Witching Hour

(Sorry for all the Amazon links. I was feeling lazy.)

I'm clueless too. My cousin married a guy that used to produce NIN music and she gave me front row seats and a back stage pass when they were in Denver years ago, and I turned it down!!!

Wow, I've never even heard of most of this stuff! I will run the list by the Kat and see what she thinks. Thanks for the help; I knew I could count on you! (except you, Dr. Monkey--you silly John Denver lover, you.)

Crow--She does love Nirvana. Thanks for the Mudhoney tip.

Matty Boy--She tends to look down on the Ramones as "old stuff." ! But Madder Rose sounds good.

Monkey--you fill up my senses, you silly monkey you.

Liberality--ooh, the chick bands--cool.

Mathman--good suggestions--she likes 4-non blondes too!

Barbara--I played her some Pixies and she just looked at me like she didn't get it. ?

Earl--that's not lazy; you're making my job easier! Thanks!

GKL--I would've turned them down too. I value my hearing.

Randal--oh, good one! I actually liked Alice in Chains back in the day.

I am probably very late with this, but just discovered your blog via Rabbits Guy's blog...so, I'd go for some Massive Attack and Tricky, mix a bit of Portishead to it. Then for something completely different... Hot Water Music and Leatherface, great ballads (but they're punkrock) and let's not forget Nick Cave. Would this do?

Mathman hit my suggestions, but I'll also add Le Tigre (for some lesbian punk rock) - it might be early 2000s, tho.
